Why Are Suits So Cheap in Bangkok? (And When “Cheap” Is Perfectly Fine)

If you’ve priced a made-to-measure suit at home and then seen Bangkok prices, the first reaction is usually surprise. A suit for the price of a nice dinner? There has to be a catch. Sometimes there is, and sometimes there genuinely isn’t. Here’s what’s actually going on, so you can tell the difference.

Reason 1: Labour costs a fraction of what it does in the West

A skilled tailor in Bangkok earns far less than an equally skilled tailor in London or New York. This is not because they’re less capable, but because the local cost of living is significantly lower.

The craftsmanship handed down through Bangkok’s tailoring families is real. What you’re not paying for is Savile Row rent and Savile Row wages. A suit that would cost £2,000+ on a famous street can be cut to a similar standard here for a small fraction of that price.

Reason 2: Fabric sourcing makes or breaks the price

This is the part most people don’t know about. The cost of a suit is dominated by cloth, and cloth pricing is often about newness or collections, not necessarily about quality. The current season’s swatches might command a premium simply because they’re current.

There’s a whole world of surplus behind that: deadstock fabric. Deadstock fabric is perfectly good but no longer this season’s featured pattern. Mills and wholesalers clear it at a deep discount. A tailor who builds their business around deadstock can pass that discount straight to you.

That’s our entire model. We hold thousands of yards of deadstock suiting fabric, primarily wool-blend fabrics bought cheaply because it isn’t the “latest” and there’s no fancy swatchbook to show for it. That’s the only reason our suits are 5,000 Baht.

The suit that comes off the table is a real, made-to-measure garment. With 5000BahtSuit.com, the saving is in the sourcing, not the sewing.

Reason 3: No showroom, no showroom markup

A tailor with a shop on a busy street or shopping mall is paying serious rent, and it’s built into every quote. Some tailors may not have such showrooms. 5000BahtSuit.com operates by appointment, instead offering an at-home or at-hotel tailoring service. We bring the fabrics and the tape measure to your hotel, condo or office. No storefront means no storefront cost, and that’s another slice off the price.

So when is “cheap” a warning sign?

Not all low prices are honest, and it’s worth knowing some key details. If it’s a 24-hour suit, you’re foregoing important fittings that ensure the suit actually fits you well. Even if you quickly try something on before you leave your hotel for your flight, it’s not a proper fitting that will show you exactly what needs to be changed to ensure a well-tailored suit.

If you’re being promised a pure wool suit for an unreasonably low price, it’s worth double- and triple-checking to make sure.

The best way to make sure you get what you’re asking for is to do some research into which tailor you would like to use, and to reach out to them directly.

How to spot a real bargain

  • The tailor takes proper measurements and offers at least one fitting.
  • You can see and feel the actual fabric before committing.
  • The price is fixed and explained. There should be no mystery “upgrades” appearing later.
  • You booked your appointment directly with the tailor.
  • Turnaround is a few days, not 24 hours (or less).

A cheap Bangkok suit made this way isn’t a compromise. It’s just a suit without the markup. Here’s exactly how our 5,000 Baht price works.
